Scholarships for NZ Summer School

The NZ Branch offers a range of annual scholarships for NZ Branch dancers, teachers and musicians who are current members of the RSCDS NZ Branch to attend a NZ Branch Summer School.
Teaching Certificate

One scholarship is available for New Zealand resident RSCDS members to take the Teaching Certificate course and examination being offered at the NZ Branch Summer School.

The scholarship is only offered in those years that certificate examination courses (Units 2/3 and Unit 5) are being run at a NZ Branch summer school.

The Teaching Certificate Scholarship is funded by the Mirth Smallwood Bequest.

Teacher Preparation Class

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide an opportunity for competent dancers who want to begin teaching Scottish Country dancing. The scholarship is also available to those who are already teaching a club and wish to attend a Teacher Preparation Class at a NZ Branch Summer School.

One scholarship is available for a NZ Branch RSCDS member to attend the Teacher Preparation class in the year it is being offered at a NZ Branch Summer School. The Teacher Preparation Class is only offered when teaching unit courses and exams are not held at the NZ Branch Summer School.

The Teaching Certificate Scholarship is funded by the Mirth Smallwood Bequest.

Musicians

The New Zealand Branch offers one scholarship for New Zealand resident musicians who are also RSCDS NZ Branch members.

Applicants will play piano (solo or accompaniment), fiddle or accordion, and will have a positive interest in playing for SCD classes. They need to have a fluent command of their instrument and be able to read music competently. It is preferable that applicants have had practical experience of Scottish Country Dancing.

The Musician’s Scholarship is funded by the Musician’s Fund.

Dancer with less than 3 years continuous experience

This Scholarship is available for a New Zealand resident RSCDS NZ Branch member to attend a NZ Branch Summer School. The Scholarship is for dancers with three years or less continuous dancing experience.

The Scholarship is funded by the Summer School fund.

Dancer with more than 3 years continuous experience

This Scholarship is available for a New Zealand resident RSCDS NZ Branch member to attend a NZ Branch Summer School. The Scholarship is for dancers with more than three years continuous dancing experience.

The Scholarship is funded by the Summer School fund.

What is covered

Scholarships cover the full resident Summer School fee, but exclude all other costs such as travel expenses and examination fees.

Previous recipients

Previous recipients of a specific scholarship are not eligible to apply for the same scholarship in subsequent years. Also dancers who have received the Dancer Scholarship (less than three years continuous dancing experience) are not eligible for the Dancer Scholarship (more than three years continuous dancing experience).

How to Apply

A Scholarship Application Form, together with two written references, must be submitted to the Branch Secretary by 30 June of the year of the relevant Summer School.

It may be submitted either online or by completing a form which should be returned to the Branch Secretary by email or post.

Processing of Applications

All scholarship applications received by 30 June will be reviewed by the NZ Branch Education & Training Co-ordinator for approval by the NZ Branch Management Committee.

Applicants will be notified if for any reason their application is not put forward for selection.

Successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible after 30 June. Unsuccessful applicants will also be notified.

Late applications will not be considered.
